MENDNOOK / INFORMATION
Editorial Policy
How MendNook researches, checks and updates its DIY content.
Our coverage
MendNook covers practical, non-structural home window and door measurements and minor repair techniques. Our articles aim to answer one real problem completely rather than creating overlapping pages for slight variations of a search phrase.
Research and accuracy
We prefer first-party manufacturer documentation for material-specific instructions, and established home-improvement references for general methods. We explain where a recommendation changes with frame style, mesh thickness or local construction practices. Brand names mentioned in source links are informational and do not imply endorsement.
Authorship and evidence
Articles are credited to our editorial team. We distinguish documented instructions from illustrative examples; we do not invent hands-on product testing, ratings, personal experience or expert credentials. Some techniques may require additional manufacturer instructions or professional help.
Geographic scope: USA, Canada and UK
Our English-language guides primarily serve US, Canadian and UK readers. A local shopping term such as weatherstripping, coupe-froid, draught-proofing or door brush can point to different mounting systems. We describe relevant markets when useful, retain both inches and millimetres where appropriate, and cite primary local sources including the U.S. Department of Energy, Natural Resources Canada and the UK's Energy Saving Trust. We do not treat a country label as a product-fit guarantee.
Construction, window escape, combustion air, ventilation and fire-door requirements differ by jurisdiction and product. England-specific regulatory guidance does not establish a rule for all UK nations or North America. Readers must follow the exact product manuals and applicable local requirements. Our material estimator is deliberately a length planning tool, never a compatibility certification or a price/energy-savings prediction.
Research workflow and illustrations
Our editorial process uses publicly available manufacturer or technical references, worked examples and explicit material limitations. Cited sources are checked where practical, but documentation can change and every product variant has not been independently verified. Writing and illustration tools may assist with drafts, diagrams or formatting, but they do not replace qualified product-specific verification. Each diagram is a schematic—not a photograph of a completed repair. We do not present generated diagrams as evidence of hands-on tests.
Evidence levels and limitations
We distinguish manufacturer-published specifications, general repair guidance from cited references, and original worked examples/calculator results. Original worked examples explain a method; they are not measurements taken from a MendNook installation. In every article, readers should verify measurements and manufacturer compatibility for the exact product, frame and location.
We have not performed hands-on or laboratory product testing. Our AI-generated photo-style visuals are labeled as illustrations and should not be read as photographic proof. Our original schematic diagrams are educational and are not engineering drawings. Where a reliable product-specific value cannot be established from documentation, we do not invent an exact recommended size or claim compatibility.
Specific claims and their primary references
The following examples were checked against public source material in the November 1, 2026 editorial review. This is a documentary source check, not a claim that all manufacturer manuals or all product variants were independently verified.
On a narrow screen, scroll this table sideways to see every column.
| Published reference | Claim supported in our guide | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Phifer screening/spline chart | Named screen/frame combinations can require different spline diameters | A chart cell is not a universal fit recommendation |
| Phifer repair-kit documentation and Lowe's patching methods | Hooked aluminum and adhesive fiberglass screen patches use different attachment methods | Dimensions and preparation belong to the exact kit; a source is not MendNook field-test evidence |
| Blinds.com general measurement guidance and its vertical-blind PDF | Height and width measurement conventions differ by product category | Your exact SKU/manual controls ordering |
| U.S. CPSC window-covering safety and UK OPSS guidance | Child-safety hazards of accessible blind cords | Local regulations and the specific covering still matter |
| U.S. EPA moisture guidance | Recurring surface condensation merits humidity and moisture-source checks | Humidity alone cannot diagnose a failed insulated-glass unit |
Each linked guide includes its own sources and a plain-language explanation of what they do not establish. A source being linked does not prove the corresponding repair has been physically tested. Send conflicting manufacturer documents or updated manuals to our editorial contact; we revise specific claims when evidence changes.
When to seek professional help
Instructions may not fit every frame, opening or installation. Work involving unstable windows, broken glass, electrical components, structural damage, high access or unfamiliar safety risks should be assessed by a qualified professional. Product-specific manufacturer directions override general articles and tool estimates.
Corrections and updates
Material guidelines can change. We correct verified errors and document source changes when practical, without implying every guide has undergone physical testing. Send correction requests to the address on our contact page. We review requests and correct verified errors.
Editorial correction and source-review record
We keep a public record of substantive documentary corrections rather than silently treating all earlier text as verified:
- 2026-11-02 — Hubs and decisions factual and source checks: fixed the door hub's inaccurate three-zone draft reference to its actual five-zone troubleshooting method; enriched sweep versus weatherstripping with Therma-Tru's own outswing exception and DOE/PNNL air sealing and flashing distinctions, not just generic supply advice. Expanded editorial validation to 3 project hubs and 3 decision articles in addition to the 37 guide sources, requiring technical references, internal follow-up paths and decision tables. Static tests still do not establish real-world installation or Google indexation.
- 2026-11-02 — Seven-guide source verification and practical troubleshooting pass: expanded mesh counts and open area with the manufacturer-attributed, relative Phifer airflow claims and clear distinction from idealized geometric openness; added condensation diagnostics based on NOAA dew-point physics, Pella glazing FAQ and two matched-condition examples. Updated roller shade tracking to isolate open rollers, enclosed cassettes and motorized drives before applying a named retailer's tape example. Strengthened exterior door draft diagnosis with a cold-surface-versus-air-leak table referencing DOE/PNNL envelope guidance, and kerf weatherstrip replacement with separate fin-retention and bulb-compression acceptance tests. Clarified screen cleaning/storage using Phifer's metal water-only versus vinyl mild-soap FAQ, and window-screen gaps using the CPSC's 2026 window-fall safety notice to separate insect retention from child-fall guards. All buying and mechanism examples remain scoped to named manufacturer directions; none are independent physical repair tests or guarantees of SEO ranking/AdSense approval.
- 2026-11-02 — Six mismatched page images corrected after a stronger production gate: the first automated test that compared image sitemap loc with each page's actual HTML img src exposed six problems despite the files existing: the homepage hero was only a CSS background, two custom calculator pages had only an unembedded generated schematic, and three topic hubs displayed different original images from the ones listed in the image sitemap. Preserved the original homepage CSS/photography while referring its image-sitemap entry to the actual visible original screen-roller photo. Added captioned, responsive first-party educational diagrams to the tape fraction converter and screen measurement decision assistant, explaining what measurements do not mean. Corrected image sitemap associations on the three project hubs to the unique diagram each page actually displays. This is image discoverability and visual truthfulness, not a claim that Google indexed the pictures or that an illustration is a tested repair photo.
- 2026-11-02 — Source re-verification, real breadcrumb paths and image sitemap accuracy: spot-checked published primary claims against Phifer spline sizing, Blinds.com vane measurements, Blinds.com cordless cellular instructions, Andersen insect-screen mechanisms, Therma-Tru door FAQs and DOE exterior door sealing. The door sweep guide now explains Therma-Tru's exact outswing no-sweep-needed exception, with a manufacturer-specific scope, not a universal DIY instruction. Corrected the window condensation and trim caulking JSON-LD BreadcrumbList: a nonexistent glass/trim hub previously duplicated the /guides/ URL. Strengthened the sitewide SEO gate to enforce unique real breadcrumb route URLs, compare visible guide navigation with its JSON-LD trail, and require that each image sitemap picture is actually rendered by an HTML img element on its own destination page. Refer to the reproducible source log in the project repository. This is selective documentary verification, not independent physical repair, comprehensive off-site link-health testing, or Google/AdSense approval.
- 2026-11-02 — Correcting misleading outside-mount order-size shortcuts and shade/track model assumptions: verified current Blinds.com general roller measuring instructions, the separately published no-valance roller fabric-measurement PDF, and outside-mount cellular instructions. For an illustrative 40-in desired fabric width, these give three different SKU/configuration-specific example order fields: 43 in, 41 3/8 in, and 40 in. Updated outside-mount measuring, the inside-vs-outside decision and coverage planner to show the conflict rather than imply a general 3-in rule; added a fourth distinct panel to the responsive source-evidence diagram. Expanded cordless cellular diagnosis to separate standard bottom-up from two-moving-rail TDBU/Day & Night shade controls using a named product-family service sheet. Enhanced sliding screen door troubleshooting with exact Andersen 100/200/400/A/E screen mechanism differences, source-described vintage screw locations and repeatable five-position checks; these are not applicable to the heavy sliding glass door. The material was reviewed against the cited source documents; no manufacturer parts were fitted and no physical repairs were independently tested.
- 2026-11-02 — Nine-guide mechanism/fit accuracy pass: made screen cleaning and storage distinguish removable, gliding and retractable mechanisms using Andersen's original support articles; clarified spline sizing where a generic Phifer FAQ can be read differently from its frame/material chart, with actual 0.140/0.125 in chart examples strictly scoped to the named profile. Added installed-offset rather than color-only decisions for screen retaining clips, a four-case screen diagonal and flatness decision, real cut-packing comparisons in weatherstripping length planning, and hardware-aware frame replacement checks. Improved exterior door corner pads by distinguishing jamb-bottom pads from under-sill leaks, vertical blind controls by separating tilt/traverse/carrier failures, and roller shades by separating spring, chain, cordless and motorized faults. Source examples: Phifer chart, Andersen cleaning, Andersen storage, Blinds.com vertical blind repair, roller shade repair and DOE exterior-door weatherstripping job aid. These are research-based illustrations and decision checklists, not first-hand field tests or universal product-fit certifications.
- 2026-11-02 — Sitewide editorial inventory, corrective learning paths and image SEO: reviewed source-level content across 37 repair guides, 3 topic hubs, 3 decision pages and 11 tools, with a separate public crawl of 61 successful HTTP pages; the crawl was not exhaustive of the 64 canonicals, and source checks are selective rather than certification of every manufacturer claim. Improved screen material choices with five specific repair follow-ups, window trim caulking with explicit IGU/rough-opening/water-damage alternatives, entry-door hinge diagnosis with repeatable six-point records, and bottom-gap measurements with component choice and post-repair safety checks. Fixed the image sitemap for all three decision guides to reference their actual educational images rather than unrelated category thumbnails. The primary support examples follow Phifer's screen fit guidance, DOE stationary-versus-moving sealing guidance and CPSC window-screen fall prevention. A completed software audit is not a physical installation test, Google ranking report or AdSense approval.
- 2026-11-02 — Screen-door sizing, material planning, and pin-retainer fit: expanded replacement sliding screen door measurements to distinguish OEM product-ID ordering from rigid frame sizing and explain how Andersen's Narroline screen parts are specified, without imposing that rule on other brands. Deepened sliding door rescreening with a hypothetical 32 × 76 in opening and 36 × 80 in mesh blank calculation, a wide-versus-narrow roll example, and before/after frame-diagonal checks; this is an educational example, not a universal cutting tolerance. Added actual Prime-Line product-series contrasts and a no-drill plunger inspection. Two original, responsive technical diagrams explain these distinct ordering and roll-width decisions. References: Andersen product ID guidance, Andersen 200 Series Narroline parts catalog, Phifer installation guidance and Prime-Line plunger catalog. Product fit and installation have not been verified by field testing.
- 2026-11-02 — Diagnostic depth, navigation and source-based repair visuals: added structured checks to loose screen mesh, sliding screen latch alignment, adjustable exterior thresholds, fiberglass rescreening and vertical blind vane replacement, grounded in named Phifer, Andersen, Therma-Tru, Lowe's and Blinds.com instructions. Added separate evidence diagrams for retainer lift versus fabric slack versus frame damage and latch tongue high, aligned or low; both are original desktop/mobile technical drawings, not photos of work completed. The symptom finder now routes torn screen fabric and screen latch misalignment directly, and places window condensation and stationary trim in their own honest navigation group, distinct from insect-screen repairs and exterior-door drafts. The illustrations support the decision, not untested claims of fit or field success.
- 2026-11-02 — Instructional visual coverage and phone legibility: reviewed every published repair guide's existing task-specific illustration and identified ten older phone SVGs that reused a 960-pixel canvas and shrank annotated parts. Re-composed these ten into separate 420-pixel-wide visual diagnostic layouts with readable, distinct checkpoints and stop warnings; the original subject-specific component drawings remain, rather than stock/AI photo scenes. The three decision guides also now have original desktop and phone diagrams: a four-part screen failure map, actual inside/outside blind mounting geometry, and top/side-versus-bottom door-seal locations. Schematics support inspection and purchase decisions; no diagrams are presented as real installation photos or field-tested results.
- 2026-11-02 — Fiberglass vs. metal patch repair and honest topic labels: published an original patching a torn window screen guide comparing adhesive-backed fiberglass and mechanically hooked aluminum products, with material-specific steps, a hypothetical cut-size calculation and explicit post-repair stop checks. Sources are the Phifer patch-kit documentation, Lowe's patch methods, and an iFixit repair sequence; none establish a personally tested MendNook repair. Reclassified the condensation diagnosis and stationary window-trim sealing under Window glass & trim, instead of incorrectly suggesting that moisture inside insulated glazing is an insect-screen problem.
- 2026-11-02 — Wrong-topic guide navigation across all three hubs: corrected a template rule that classified guides by incidental words in URL slugs. This had placed some sliding insect-screen-door topics under exterior door weatherstripping, omitted cordless/roller blind repairs from the window-blinds collection, and could show blinds inside window-screen browsing. Screen repairs, blinds and shades and door weatherstripping now draw cards from the same guide taxonomy used in guide-directory filters and breadcrumbs. Automated release checks now verify the four guide-directory filters. The three topic hubs cover screens, blinds and exterior-door seals; window-glass and stationary-trim topics are deliberately kept out of unrelated screen and door hubs and remain reachable from the full guide directory.
- 2026-11-02 — Condensation and retainer guide consolidation: replaced repeated after-source paragraphs in the window-condensation diagnostic with one safe surface-location test, EPA-grounded humidity context, a seven-day log and separate IGU-versus-whole-window questions. The window-screen clip guide now groups buying checks into one fit record and makes CPSC's warning that insect screens are not window guards explicit. The duplicated generic end-of-guide disclaimer has been removed from all 36 pages; original cited bibliography and editorial transparency remain.
- 2026-11-02 — Sliding insect-screen roller identification: the roller replacement guide now distinguishes Andersen 100 Series (top and bottom rollers), 200/400/A-Series (top guide or roller variants) and E-Series (glide hooks, no insect-screen rollers). We checked Andersen's 100 Series support against its separate 200/400/A-Series and E-Series explanation. The new mobile/desktop mechanism drawing is schematic, not an OEM part-fit illustration.
- 2026-11-02 — Cordless window-covering symptom scope: the mini-blind repair guide now separates slatted spring-reactivation symptoms from internal friction hardware; the cellular-shade guide now accurately states the firm-tug language on the Blinds.com cellular support page while explicitly limiting the procedure to approved models. Both guides refer readers to CPSC window-covering cord safety rather than suggesting exposed-cord or spring-cartridge modification.
- 2026-11-02 — Roller-shade telescoping: expanded the roller tracking guide and created separate readable desktop/mobile schematics showing fabric drift RIGHT → check opposite LEFT tube end, and vice versa, only for designs whose manual approves the approach. The Blinds.com roller repair page describes the manufacturer-specific opposite-end tape method; the diagrams do not authorize repairs to motorized/dual-sheer assemblies or unsafe mounts.
- 2026-11-02 — Exterior door sweep installation: replaced the generic tax-credit reference in the installation guide with the U.S. DOE/NREL weatherstripping job aid (June 2024 PDF). The revised guide separates dry-fit, full swing clearance, latching, drainage and correct sill compatibility into observable pass/fail checks, not guarantees of an untested product.
- 2026-11-02 — Vertical-blind vane ordering: added an original comparison drawing to the vane replacement guide distinguishing installed headrail-top-to-vane-bottom from the bare material length. This follows the named Blinds.com replacement-vane ordering convention; the hypothetical difference is not a standard carrier deduction or universal order rule.
- 2026-11-02 — Exterior door diagnostic and sweep compatibility: consolidated the door-draft guide into five separately observable leak zones and rewrote the sweep selection guide to compare factory seals, swing direction and sill compatibility. The distinct Therma-Tru single- versus dual-bulb sill pairings and Frost King surface-sweep installation advice are manufacturer-specific, not universal recommendations. Added an original annotated five-zone schematic; it does not represent a physical inspection.
- 2026-11-02 — Weatherstripping stock lengths: improved the door weatherstrip calculator from a total-length lower bound to an explicit three-run unspliced cut-fit planning check. Two 108-inch rolls may total enough raw length for three required cuts yet still be geometrically unable to supply them. The tool now labels its assumptions and does not certify roll usability, manufacturer-approved joins or the gasket profile; see the measurement guide.
- 2026-11-02 — Outside-mount blind sizing: revised the outside-mount guide to separate the desired fabric coverage from the manufacturer's order width. The Blinds.com roller measuring guide explains a model-category 3-inch bracket allowance, while its cellular guide uses a different outside-mount sizing path. These are source-specific examples, not blanket purchase dimensions.
- 2026-11-02 — Screen mesh count and openness: rebuilt the mesh count guide using Phifer's mesh, aperture, yarn and openness definitions. New geometric open-area percentages are explicitly hypothetical teaching calculations and not measured airflow or product tests.
- 2026-11-02 — Window screen edge gaps: replaced repetitive troubleshooting advice with a retention-and-fit decision path that distinguishes mesh/groove failures from frame/track retention. Milgard's screen removal PDF is cited as a series-specific example, not a universal reinstallation procedure. The CPSC safety warning remains explicit.
- 2026-11-01 — Inside-mount blind measurements: explicitly compared current Blinds.com measuring guidance with its horizontal sheer-shades PDF. Their height instructions differ for the named sheer categories; the guide now labels the conflict and asks readers to verify the exact current product sheet rather than treating either as universal.
- 2026-11-01 — Sliding insect-screen doors: made the distinction between bottom rollers and manufacturer-specific top-hung glide hooks visible in the troubleshooting guide using Andersen service documentation.
- 2026-11-01 — Screening materials: checked the actual Phifer screening and spline chart and clarified that the listed aluminum, fiberglass and specialty-fabric cells can differ even for one named frame profile. See the spline selection guide.
- 2026-11-01 — Child and window safety: incorporated CPSC window-covering guidance and CPSC guidance on insect-screen fall protection limits in relevant repair and measurement pages.
